PREFACE
For eight
years now,
I have
been the
instructor of
the Church
of God in
Christ History
& Polity
for the
C. H. Mason Theological
Seminary at
the Interdenominational Theological
Center (ITC)
in Atlanta,
Georgia. When
I first began
teaching the
Church of
God in Christ History
classes, I
noticed that
materials were
extremely hard
to acquire.
Much of
the materials
were out
of print.
When resources
became available,
they would
be in
print for
only a short
length of
time.
For the
past 35
years, I
have collected materials
on the
Church of
God in Christ. Before
my many
moves, I
used to
have one
of the largest
collection of
the “Whole
Truth,” not
knowing that
God had
ordained my
life to
follow the
path that
it has.
Since a
teenager, I
have developed
a love
of the Church of
God in
Christ. I kept
a collection of
old Sunday
School quarterlies,
YPWW quarterlies, national and
jurisdictional souvenir booklets.
Having been
a student
and lover
of Church
History and
especially, the Church
of God
in Christ History
well over
thirty (30)
years and
raised not
too far
from Memphis,
I am
able to
bring a
wealth of
historical tidbits
that are not
in the resources that
I have
discovered. These
tidbits I
share in
the seminars that
I conduct.
For the
past eight
years, I
have been encouraged
by the
students of
C. H. Mason Seminary
to write
a book
on the history of
the Church
of God
in Christ.
Not thinking
much of
this suggestion, it
was not
until 1995,
after a
miraculous recovery
from an
aneurysm, which
according to
my doctors, I
should have
died, a
testimony that
I share
joyously, I
began to
think that
I should listen
to my
students and
write this
book. For
the past
four years,
I have
endeavored to
write the
history of
this great
Church.
At Mason Seminary, I
have had
the pleasure
of teaching
the sons,
daughters, grandsons,
and granddaughters
of pioneers
and the
leaders of
this church.
I have shared my knowledge of Church of
God in
Christ with
the son of
a General
Board member,
sons and
daughters of
bishops and
state supervisors. I have
had the
pleasure of
teaching, Nikkie
Lewis, the
great granddaughter
of Bishop
Mack Jonas,
the man
who tarried
with Bishop
Mason at
the Azusa
Street Revival
to receive
the Holy
Ghost in
1907. I
am honored that Dean Haney and ITC
have allowed
me to
share what
God has
called me
to do. I have had
the honor
of meeting
and teaching
pastors and
missionaries at
the C. H. Mason Bible
College for Central Georgia.
The first
book on
the life
of Bishop
C. H. Mason was written by
Professor James
Courts, the
first principal
of Saints
Industrial Academy
around 1918.
Other biographies were written
by family
members and
close associates
of Bishop
Mason. His
widow,Mother Elsie
Mason, has
written two
books on
the life
of Bishop
Mason and
of the
Church of
God in Christ. His
daughter, Mary
Mason, wrote
a biography
in 1922,
which was
the first
real account
of the
man, Bishop
Charles Harrison
Mason. Another
daughter, Mother
Lelia Mason
Byas has
written a
wonderful book
on the
life of
Bishop Mason,
giving up
a good account
of Bishop
Mason’s early
life. Bishop
Pleas wrote
a book commemorating the
50th (Golden)
Anniversary of
the Church
of God
in Christ in
1959. Dr.
Lucille Cornelius’
book, Pioneer,
gave us
a complete account
of the formative
years of
the Church
and Bishop
Mason. Bishop
German Ross
wrote a
book on the
history of
the Church. However
all these
resources are
not in print and
extremely hard
to acquire.
In my
opinion the
best resource
on the
life of
Bishop Mason
and the
Church of
God in
Christ was
written by
the former
church historian
and former
General Board
member, Bishop
Ithiel Clemmons.
This resource
is an
updated explanation
of the
events of
the Church
of God
in Christ, especially
in the
transition era.
Every member of the Church of God in Christ should own a
copy of
this book.
There has
been a renaissance of
interest concerning
the history of
the Church
of God
in Christ. The
pioneers or
first generation Church
of God in Christ
saw no
need to
write the
history, for
they believed,
as did
the first century Christian, that
Jesus would
soon be
returning any
day, so
there would
be no history for us
to know
or learn.
Therefore because of this
misunderstanding of eschatological
events, a
plethora of
miracles performed
by Bishop
Mason and
other pioneers
were not
documented and
therefore can
not be
verified.
The purpose of this
book is
to give to
this new
generation of
Church of
God in
Christ members
with the
history of
the Church of
God in
Christ. Too
many of our young people don’t know
about the
origin of
this great
church. Even
though I am a
critic of
this church,
I feel
that I am one of
its most
loyal members.
I want those who read
this resource
to know
our history.
Even though this is a research based book,
I did not
want it
to have the
flavor or language
of an advance
research. I
want my Sunday School class to be able to read about the history of the
Church of God in
Christ with
clarity and
understanding.
